We had the pleasure of staying at Lions Rock two years ago - I hope that Koda is still there. It was amazing to see the animals we saw - especially the wild dogs. We will defintely visit again.

Came acroos a great story last night
Task edit 30min sport highlight show.
Position required ..freelance editor.
Rate: neg.

I was told the show should be ready to add voice and mix at 11am.
By 5pm still no show and my time was costing the company lots to wait.
Its the old question of ..Is experience worth the amount paid?
You see the problems didnt start earlier that day when the editor powered on the avid but rather the previous day when he was hired.
He was accepted to do the work based on him being an "editor". someone who can perform and complete direction.
His fee requested was that of the standard rate and expetations were high.
Now for the standard editor with some experience , the task was not too duanting yet it fell way above our budding editors abilities. You see he was able to do the manditory push button ..move picture part but when an even small technical problem raised its head , he was left with his finger rising where the sun dont shine.

so now 6 hours of waiting and the studios bill for me was climbing . .
The piece de resistance came when he was playing out to tape ..eventually. . but then i noticed the pictured was jittering, it had a shimmer that could only be explained as a flickering field throughout the show..but for our budding standard pay requesting 'EDITOR" his comment was .." oh that must be a dolby problem.. you can fix that in the mix!"

somethings cant be fixed in the mix and experience should be treated as gold.

If a young ,still learning sound person is expecting the same pay as that of a vetran..get real take that finger and feel behind your ears ..its wet..Believe it or not...you have lots to learn.. sound engineers are like a good whiskey.. get better with age and cost a lot more.

As for the going rates ..
I am told two weeks ago that mnet studio mixer with little experience get about R800 per shift clear.. thats a shift that can last from 1hour to 12 hours

In final mix .. I will not work for less than R250 per hour.
As in life ..you get what you pay for...or so you hope .

I agree .... To get distorted / overly compressed / low level location sound adds hours in the final mix .The engineer is then ften given the daunting task of trying to panel beat the sound to get at least something useable. In some cases no matter how much experience and time in the audio suite is used , kuk remains kuk.
location audio recorded properly is worth the money and the time.

This seems a great idea . It would be great to have everybody standardized but i think with so much new blood that has no clue between db's dbu's dbm's vu meters and ppm meters its going to be a long uphill.. and maybe with a cd for reference is a good start.. These new editors.. sound "engineers" and tv production people have gotten the job with little or no technical background to base their position on . My questions be.. what are your discs referenced to . This referencing is a very debated subject..
-18db digitally , 0db vu .. -9 ppm is what I would term as standard. look even our local broadcasters cant agree .. SABC dolby off ?? that firstly is wierd .. MNET dolby on.. SABC 0db vu ..MNET -2db VU and these are set to -6ppm ..even this i find strange. ..if editors captured audio at proper levels using those boxes with the lights on in front of them properly .. final mix times would be spent more creatively than trying to panelbeat some wet eared , over confident , under educated editors mistakes.. great idea
